The only fully immersive virtual reality I want is something that would let me visit old stores like Caldor or long dead malls from the 70s and 80s.
I think the reason VR technology isn’t pushed is because if it was done well it would negatively impact global tourism. Imagine if VR tours of Walt Disney World or Niagra falls existed-lots of people would be content with experiencing these things virtually. A good virtual roller coaster probably exists right now but it’s probably being suppressed by the roller coaster manufacturers.
Yet so much money could be made and so much history preserved if we could start virtualizing every aspect of our existence. If we could capture simple things like trips to the mall, visiting museums or walks in the park and digitize them then they’d be like time capsules. It would be the closest thing to time travel we could leave to future generations.
