Hey, Frank!
Great show, as always. I know you said this logo was temporary, but I think it’s the best one yet! I think you should keep it!
As a tea lover, I’d like you to check out Tavalon Tea - http://www.tavalon.com. I admit that I haven’t tried it yet myself, but a friend of mine owns the company, so I’m sure he can use some reviews!
Still waiting for my Podglo invite request so I can leave a voice comment…
Cheers,
Brian

Correction/Clarification - my friend, Chris Cason, is a Co-Founder, which I think makes him AN owner of the company, as well as the official Tea Sommelier.

Brian,
I did actually visit Tavalon on 14th Street and I mentioned it on The Overnightscape #563 (10/23/06):

It is a really cool place, I should go back there.
You don’t need a PodGlo account to leave an audio comment. But email dougjk (at) podglo.com and I’m sure he can help you.
The logo… I will think about it… maybe it is the right way to go…?

The logo is great, but I’d suggest using it as an occasional change-from-the-norm, rather than moving over completely and wearing out the novelty appeal. Nothing like a bit of variety.

Hi Frank,
Good episode! I have so much to write.
Sucralose (chlorinated sucrose) is an artificial sweetener, also known as Splenda. The manufacturer of sucralose claims the sucralose molecule passes through the body unchanged, is not metabolized, and is eliminated after consumption, but recent studies have determined that roughly twenty percent of sucralose is absorbed by the body and is not excreted in a timely manner.
Some concern stems from the fact that sucralose contains the carcinogen chlorine. Chlorocarbons (chlorine-containing compounds) have been known to cause organ, genetic, and reproductive damage. According to Dr. Janet Hull, sucralose tests in lab rats have resulted in shrunken thymus glands, calcification of the kidneys, gastrointestinal problems, and fertility issues in males. Another study published in the Journal of Mutation Research linked high doses of sucralose to DNA damage in mice.
You’re right about iced tea and beverages in general though: why is there a need for sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and artificial sweeteners, all in one drink? Why add sweeteners at all? Why not let me add my own sweetener, if I even choose to?
You’re also right about the rice you bought: it’s pre-cooked, also known as parboiled. If you want healthier, uncooked brown rice, the cooking time in the instructions will be somewhere around 35 to 45 minutes. Cooking times that are under 30 minutes are a sign that the rice is parboiled. Avoid that junk.
Thanks for posting the Fuzzy Daupner concert. It’s weird to think that was seven years ago. We had some cool songs and it’s too bad the whole thing didn’t catch on more.
After living in NYC for several years, I guess I got used to the insane prices for food. Still, $7 for a croissant and orange juice is completely nuts. That should cost, at the very most, $4. The place you went to is a rip-off, even by Manhattan standards.
I’ve also noticed that service in NYC is usually atrocious. In my experience, most people who work at stores like CVS, Rite Aid, Met Food, etc. are useless morons who can’t be bothered to help me. When I ask where something is, instead of showing me, they just mumble and point vaguely toward an aisle. Wow, thanks for the effort.
Paying for something with a $100 bill is equal to paying for something with pennies. They’re both perfectly legitimate forms of money, yet they’re both frowned upon by cashiers.
You were really close with your George Harrison impression at the end. You should continue to refine it!
