On the show we talked a lot about audio processing and stuff, so I wanted to let you know what I did to process the audio of this show...

The show was recorded using 2 microphones, and recorded onto Audacity on my Linux laptop. The stereo file recorded had one microphone on the left channel , and one on the right.

I exported from Audacity to stereo WAV... then transferred them to my Windows XP laptop and loaded them into Sonar LE. There, I split the stereo tracks into 2 individual tracks, and set one to 20% left and one to 20% right, and then exported as a new stereo mix in WAV (I did this to preserve some degree of "spatial" aspect to the recording - I thought going pure mono would be a little dull).

Then, I transferred the files to my old Mac and converted to AIF, which I then put through T-Racks (mastering) after I customized a good setting. Then, I merged all the audio together, trimmed the beginning and end, faded out the end, and normalized the whole thing. Then, I converted the AIF to MP3, added the tags and show art, and uploaded to my server.

I am happy with the final result - I think it sounds good - much better than the raw audio as it was originally recorded.

Three notes from this recording.

First off, for some reason you sounded a bit sad when talking about how video is overtaking audio. Do you know that Leo Laporte recently stated that his audio podcasts are much more popular than his video podcasts? So perhaps it's not the medium but rather the fact that many audio shows are not very interesting. I find your shows to be interesting but it is difficult to build an audience as a general entertainment show. You're competing against the likes of Howard Stern, Boomer and Carton, etc.

Have you ever thought about using a stats redirect system? It sounds like the methods you are using to determine the download counts are highly suspect. Counting MBs is not even close to an accurate way to measure downloads. Podtrac and Blubrry (maybe Radiotail) both offer free redirect services for download statistics.

Final point. Do you really think that Doug's software is going to change podcasting? He's been claiming that this is going appear for almost three years now. At this point any claims about what it can do are moot. It's vaporware. If you want to add audio or video comments to your blog then try Riffly at http://www.riffly.com.

Hi Frank! Thanks for the congratulations on my wedding on March 24th this year (our announcement was March 10th, it was a short engagement). We had a spectacular time. Still catching up on your shows and loving every minute.

My two cents... no matter what controversial subject you talk about, I will continue to listen to the show. I may not agree with your opinion all the time; however, the differences in our views motivates me to educate myself more on these topics. It allows me to form my own opinion and that is one of the things that makes this world great.

By the way, yes... your podcast is great while high ;)

All your shows are fantastic! Looking forward to more, more, more!!
